How does the online play work cause I've never played GTA online before?

Online play is fun as hell. Just about anything you can think of you can do. If you play with a group of people you know it's even more fun. Destruction, chaos etc.
There is all kinds of mini games too. Gang territory, Deathmatch, car racing etc.
