She has family there, and been wanting to go visit them for a while. Not all of us are ballers that can afford to go on a big trip. She is starting a new job next week so money is tight right now. Not really sure what we are going to be able to afford at this point, have to see how this new job works out in terms of timing on paycheck and such..

This. I used to average like $250 returned and paid in maybe $3. Until that sweet lil Bush idea where, if you have a job, you get a cool $1k or so.

Dang. How many exemptions did you put down on your W4? I originally had 3 when I started working where I work now but quickly realized that I would be paying back the next year so changed it to 1. Got about $1k back. Could probably change it to 2 exemptions and get more money throughout the year and get a couple hundred around tax time.
And to answer the question...$200 to a Galaxy S3 (first time ever having a smart phone) and the rest into savings due to a wedding and honey moon coming up in April

Age has nothing to do with how much tax you pay. I've filed single and made almost 3x that and get a return every year. (usually $750-1000) It's about how much you pay in vs owe. This is the first year I've filed married and added a dependent. I still paid in at the single rate and moved WAY down the tax bracket since my wife doesn't work/much. Hella Return! I'd adjust my withholdings for next year, but she's going to start teaching, so I'm sure it'll be different.
