The holes originally were actually designed to prevent gas build up on the surface of the rotor on older brake designs to maximize braking performance / less fade due to the gasses. Contrary to belief ( I used to think this too) the holes do not provide extra cooling, infact they create more heat and weak points which does lead to cracking. I know this because I was torn to pieces by someone

when I thought they were for cooling too
