He's hated because he's a self absorbed douchebag who knows nothing about racing or cars. All he is interested in is seeing himself on TV and hearing himself talk. The events were poorly run to boot.
It started out as a decent concept when it was more like street racing. But he like the negotiations so much because he got more camera time so they did more of it which just ruined it. Then they started with the "all out" series which was nothing more than boring ass bracket racing.
