So has anyone actually did a diy headlight retrofit?
Want to try it out when I get a spare headlight in. I know you can have them shipped off and done for 600-700 but I want to do a diy since a halogen stock headlight can be gotten for 40-60.
I know you have to dremel the headlight. Just wondering if anyone has done it and can give pointers or if they created an install guide of some sort. |
I sent mine out. A lot easier. If you get on the dfw5.0 facebook page frank did his own.

I thought Frank bought his already retrofitted?
It's actually not a hard process, just tedious to make sure everything is lines up correctly and square. I started a set on my old truck, but didn't get to finish them before the truck was totaled. The killer in the price of having them done for you is the labor charges. Materials can be had for a good price through The Retrofit Source |
Dont have a spare car that can manage to get into the job that I work at ( other too low) so I have to use the mustang as a main vehicle so can't send off headlights.
So based on that site you sent yours out at my total would come to 820 before any shipping charges etc. Headlights - 100/ 100 if I bought my own. projector - Included or 150 extra for fxr/ mini- 100 fxr 3.0-70 ( dont know if they are the 3.0 or the original ones couldn't find any on site to confirm. Shroud- Included/ 45 Paint- gloss black 70/ 50 to send it off and have it painted with custom paint on shrouds. Hid- Included (dont know what brand)/ 55 off brand/ 85 morimoto Time- included/ Say 5 hrs Cost- 820 vs 340 They might turn out worse or better but I figure it'll be worth the chance to try them out Plus I want to do something like this on a mustang though. http://retroshop.us/2009+%20Ford%20F...s/DSC08846.jpg |
You can find a decent pair of factory headlights that some ditched for Raxioms for a good price typically.
If you are going to do it yourself, I recommend doing an OE ballast and bulb setup, like the Denso + Osram bulbs. As for the projector, the Mini has become quite popular. I think the FX-R in a 2.5" might be big, but you would have to see what other people are using in S197 housings. I recommend that you get with the shop that did Grant's, or get with Yuke's Retrofits (on Facebook of SVTPerformance) as he does a number of S197 lights and can tell you the best overall fit, as well as give a few pointers. |
I have a pair of factorys sitting in my garage! And mine cost me $650. With new housing.

That includes everything and the 3 stage automotive black gloss paint, shrouds, hids, projectors and everything

Did you have to splice the wires in or were they plug and play?

Plug and play. A harness will be used which has pigtails for a 9006 where the other end plugged for the HIDs |

I HIGHLY recommend ordering morimoto hid kit. Yes it is expensive but it will come with everything you need and they will last. Trust me!
