Cheap powdercoat?
I purchased these wheels from dark pony about 3mo back. Great wheels as he hardly drive on them no complaints with dark pony. The past months I've started to notice something rather odd. Powder coating is starting to chip off. I know powrdecated parts are suppose to be kinda durable but these scratch easily, are not powder coated evenly as you can see and they chip if dust blows.
Dark pony says they have a warranty so we will see but just thought I would share. Caliber collision did them I believe or referenced someone. Here are pics. |
Caliber Collision outsourced them, I believe. Get Beau's contact info from Johnathan, and give him a call.
Im not upset or anything just really weird cause ive never seen powdercoat be less durable then car paint.
Bad prep on the wheels will make it do that.
Yeah they probably didn't clean them super well. Powder coating is all in the prep. Any dust or oils left on the rim will mess it up. Make it peel or flake over time.
Magic Touch in Lewisville outsources it, but they do great work. They do it right, and its about a hundo per wheel.
I think they are gonna try and make things right.
Update: spoke with Beau at the shop. Said to bring them by monday and it shouldn't be a problem to get them warrantied. So until Monday....
Gotta love getting good customer service

Dropped off wheels yesterday. Beau is a great guy and I would reccomends anyone to do business with him.

I gotta get my cheap set of '09 GT500's powdercoated. They are going to be used only for my racing wheels, since they were cheap, clear brembos, and are semi-lightweight. I got them with shitty tires for about $250, but they guy painted them once with something that won't come off with all the paint strippers I could buy. So the only step for me is to media blast and powdercoat. Probably will go something obnoxious like golden yellow gloss as these wheels are meant to be beat on and be seen on the track.
Local guy in my area will do media blasting at $30/hour, then $75 per wheel for powder/clear. |
Shit A guy up here in Gainesville quoted me 60$ a wheel balsted and coated.
Got the wheels recoated and wouldnt you know it....its already doing the samething. SO I just plastidipped them to protect them. Kinda upset about it the whole deal but im gonna take them to another powdercoater at a later time. Fucking sucks,.
Ouch! How much did you come out of pocket?

Just the gas down their and back. It was a warranty fix. Its just not worth me driving down there again to have it happen again. Im not upset at Beau at all just the powdercoater doing cheap work.
Powdercoating is great right up to the point it needs some kind of repair. Which, if it's on something that gets DRIVEN, is pretty often.
The only way to "repair" a powdercoated part is to remove it from the car, strip it completely, and refinish it at a shop that can apply the powder and put it in an oven. That's kind of a pain in the ass, especially if it's something big and hard to remove - like the frame of a car. Just strip them and paint them. Powdercoating, in general, sucks. |
