3.31 vs 3.73
Have any of you guys arena difference when running the 2 cars against each other? I really haven't been able to find much on this. Will the cars run close or will one walk away?
|
a 3.73 car will reach the power band quicker than a 3.31 car, but if given enough room, the 3.31 car will end up in front because the top speed will be slightly higher from having a taller, longer gear.
also, it depends on if you are trying to go from a dig or a roll. 3.73 might give you traction problems in lower gears with quick acceleration, but would spin the RPMs quicker once traction is had. |
Depends on if your talking about from a roll or dig. Equal power would be a drivers race imo

If you want to do straight line racing, rather highway or track, and don't plan to go boost, get 3.73s. If you plan to go boost, as Nic (midnight) said, stay 3.31s.
|
I have 3.31s and will be keeping them because I plan on going TVS down the road.

4.10's FTW!!!!! Plus I got some for sale for 100 bucks with less then 300 miles in them.:driver:

33.1s are pretty f'in steep, it'll prob blow tire in every gear and top out around 50 or so.

Steve is stock but nick has about 40hp so wouldn't be a good comparison of just gears. Josh and I will have to solve this at the track sometime

My car is boosted and runs the 3.73's. If you are going to street/strip race your car and boost it I recommend keeping the 3.31's. It's hard to find traction or react quick enough to the near instant redline when I don't spin.

ill still say 373s are a prime gear for a bolt on car |

With pushrod motors you have peak power and a broad torque curve starting as low as 4k RPM so you want to keep that power band longer with a taller gear. Although this is useless if you have too much power, or not enough power and how you're putting it down. I think I saw this somewhere but it's something like this for Mustangs: 350HP or less = 4.10's 350-450 = 3.73's 450-550 = 3.55's 550 and up = 3.23 or 3.31 in our case. |
I have 3.31s, let's race.

i'll be adding in an Eaton Limited Slip Differential as well since they will have the rear end opened for the gears. |
<--keeping my 3.15's....

This is kind of what I feel I might do next. I rarely have the car at 120+ and I am not going boosted or big power anytime soon, so I wouldn't mind ditching my 3.31s for 3.73s. No Jeff I don't want your 4.10s!
