Default California Special wheels

I'm at a crossroads.

I want more meat under the car, but I keep reading how 18s aren't going to fill up the wheel well enough unless it's lowered.

So I was thinking about keeping my GT/CS wheels and powder-coating the charcoal part of it black (just leaving the machine 'teeth' to stand out). I kind of think it'd look pretty cool.

My question is how much tire can I put on those wheels??

255 is as wide as you can go with the 8.5 wheel I was told. Thats why I'm ditching them
