Square balances the car's handling characteristics. Ever wonder why people say driving a car on bigs and littles is so sketchy? You have a 1' wide contact patch on the rear tires versus a 8" contact patch on the tires that you steer with...meaning the front tires hold less lateral grip.

Naye. If you really want max handling, stuff as much tire as will fit (or allowed per rules if competition). Balance the handling with spring and swaybar selection.
I actually run square for street (stock brembos - but nice to rotate), and picked tires within SCCA STU limits (285 max for 2WD).
