Long answer short, his tires shouldn't be stretched based on the measurements unless I am doing it wrong.

That 255mm is section width, measured across the largest part of the tires, apex of the unflexed sidewall to the other apex. 8.5" wheels are measure inside of the beads of the wheels. Of you were to measure your front wheels, they would end up being about 9.5-9.75" tall from lip to lip.

I have 255s on my 9" wheels and there is barely any tire protecting the lips.
