View Full Version : Help me out fellas. I can't decide on new tire sizes.

I'm currently running 245/40/20 on 20x8.5 front and 295/35/20 on 20x10. It's an auto with stock 3.15 gears
It's getting close for a new set of tires and I can't decide on 255/35/20 and 285/35/20 Pilot Super Sports or my current sizes in Nitto Invos.
So I will be trading extra height, sidewall protection, more rear traction and possibly comfort for lesser weight, probably better MPG, more front traction, probably better balance but less protection and comfort.
An X factor is that I love the way 295s look on a lowered car but the only 295 that will fit on my offset is a Nitto Invo since they are .2 inches narrower than others.
None of this would be a problem if I had 9 inch wide front rims SMH.

I thin those sizes are perfect. The MPSS is going to be a great upgrade, even with doing a size smaller in the rear.
I say go for it.

I use Tire Rack.com and I try to stay within the same tire height. I love the Continental Extreme Contact DW but I've been thinking of going from 19" stock rims to 20's with a staggered fitment 20X8.5/20X10. When I was researching those sizes the best tires for that set up were Nitto Invo 255/35-20 front and 285/30-20 back IMO. Not bad price-wise either

A 30 series tire is just too small on a S197. The car is too heavy.

Well it depends on what your section width is too.

I had 305/30r19s on mine, they rode fine, but they looked terrible. Too thin. These cars need some tire in the fender well. I switched to a 285/35 and they're way better.

What about a 255/40/20 and 285/35/20 tires? Both are about 28" tall and give back a little more protection while filling up the fenders better.

255/40 sidewall is taller than a 285/35. It is looks extremely awkward to me. I previously had a setup similar to this for a short time period when I switched fron 275 to 295

I wanted to post a quick follow up. I initially ended up going with 255/40/20 and 295/35/20 Pilot Super Sports. Both tires were 28 and 28.1 inches tall. I was skeptical about the 295s but everybody at Discount tire was like "Dude mount them. If they rub then bring them back." I never knew they had a return policy. Welp that 295 stuck out about 2mm too wide and rubbed on the deepest bumps. There's a huge bump on 423 heading into the Colony that will bottom out any performance car LMAO. So I took those back and grabbed 255/35/20 and 285/35/20. The 27 and 27.9 inch tall tires feel much lighter and have a lower sense of gravity. But the biggest thing about the Super Sports is the grip. The front tires have so much grip until I thought my steering was set to sport instead of standard. We'll see how they last but they are worth every penny in wet or dry conditions. I even find myself driving faster because of the confidence in the tires.

Keep us updated. My Continental Extreme DW's are nearing the end of their life and I am considering going to 20's
I believe the stock tire height is in the neighborhood of 27" so an extra inch doesn't hurt

28 inches in the rear is cool but anything above 27.5 in the front just feels weird. It felt like the car's center of gravity was higher than it was suppose to be.

Welp that 295 stuck out about 2mm too wide .... So I took those back
What are they going to do with those 295/35s? I'm looking for a pair of MPSS that size.
My GT runs 265/35-20 and 305/35-20 Nittos.

They are going to sell them for $20 - $40 cheaper per tire. Call the Discount Tire Little Elm located on 423 ASAP because the tires had about 50 miles on them. They were sticky as honey. I know they sold the 255/40/20 to a Panamara owner but I doubt the 295s have moved.

I called, and they have already shipped them back to Michelin as "ride complaint" takeoffs. Bummer.

Good timing to see this thread....
I have a set of 20x8.5 and 20x10 on the car now, with 255/35/20 and 275/35/20's... I just got a new set of wheels that are 20x9 and 20x11 and don't think I can use the rears but can the fronts...
Question is - how big can I go on the back for a 20x11 rim, have it look well and not rub? 295? 305?

Whats your offset on the rear? You should be able to get at least a 305/35/20 back there if your offset is in the 50s. I assume these are forgestar wheels?

Yeah, they are Forgestars, and the offset is 27.75 - actually I was just informed not to go off what the box says, but check the back of the wheel. I didn't see any indicating marks of what the offset may be..... Just may need to call them to find out.

I think they put a fake offset on the box because they dont like giving out the measurements. I would call to double check

I just called them, the box is way off.... Gave them the engraved number off of the back and got all the details.
20x9 +34 needs a 255/35/20
20x11 + 53 needs a 295/35/20

You can probably fit a 305 on the rear and still be fine.

Go 265/35/20 in the front if u can . More sidewall to match the 295. Better grip and basically the same weight as a 255 plus a pound at the most
