2011 5.0 with 40k miles on it

Driving home from work yesterday about 60mph on the highway, I heard a whirring sound and then my A/C stopped blowing cold. Upon inspection, it appears the A/C compressor clutch went out -- it is just slipping and there is residue coming off it.

Being that i'm over 40k miles the dealer wont cover this under warranty, right?

Any idea what the dealer would charge to replace A/C compressor clutch pulley assembly?

Anybody seen A/C go out on these cars so early? Any suggestions on what to do? If the dealer is a rip I may dig into this myself.

Just seen someone post the same thing no too long ago on another forum.

2011 with 40k miles and he had to replace everything due to debris in the lines from the pump eating itself alive.

2300 or so in repairs... I think he went after the dealer to get a discount since it was so close to the end of his warranty. Not sure of the outcome though.

Dang, that blows.

Being the AC isn't considered drivetrain, I don't think it's under warranty.

I'd visit an AC shop first and see if they can do something.

Unless you have really good rapport with a dealership I doubt they will cover it. I take it you don't have an extended warranty either? If you end up needing someone to repair it all and don't mind going to south Ft. Worth I might be able to help you out.

I called around today. Dealer Service dept quoted me "starting at $1400 for that job."

The dealers' parts depts I called didn't have in stock but were quoting me $506. I ordered new AC Compressor w/ clutch assembly off fordparts.com for just over $400. Hopefully it'll be in Monday... I'm fairly handy.. replaced trannys, clutches, even swapped motors before on past cars.

Still have no clue why this would go out on my 2.5 year old car. I think previous work a dealer did on my car caused this, but no way to prove it. My 15+ year old Altima w/ 160K was blowing ice cold AC today with original parts..:alone:

I'm thankful I bought mine with the 100k mile Ford certified per-owned warranty.

I work at a ford dealership in the shop, can't say I've ever seen too many 5.0s come in for anything other than battery cables. Positive post leak and build up corrosion causing the cable to get ate up

Is it just the clutch? If so you wouldn't need to replace the entire compressor unit. Also you wouldn't have to evacuate the system either. I'd start with that.

$1400 that's $200 shy of what I just paid to have the A/C fixed on my GTO. Fricking Aussie's.

My AC unit went out in my 11, lucky for me I was still under warranty at 32k. They replaced the whole unit.

Clutch assembly is 200, or for 405 get all new compressor with clutch assembly already attached. I'll check it out and if the original compressor is still good maybe I can sell it for a few bucks back or have a spare for when this one dies...

This experience (A/C dying so young) has left a sour taste in my mouth with the car. Hopefully after I get it fixed and back on the road I'll be happy again. :baby:

Do you know specifically what failed on your A/C?
